Hardly anything has altered and influenced photography and our notion of identity as much as the digital revolution: “I think, therefore I am” has turned into “I take pictures, I document, therefore I am.” The issue of our own identity has always been one of mankind’s fundamental questions, and it has ever since materialized in social, political and cultural forms of expression. The resulting question of “Who do I want to or ought to be?” is as much a standard prop in culture, philosophy, economy, theology and politics as its collective version of “Who are we?” – as a group, as a society, as a nation, as Europeans, or as mankind.
The exhibition project Me, Myself and I which was planned in collaboration with the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf explores how these questions are changing and developing under the influence of digital media. How do global digital and technological developments influence human identity, and what kind of society will emerge in this process? How are our notions of identity and our desires shaped or even created through digital communication?
